Brooke came to me with a hippo and a piece of African kitenge fabric she had cherished from their travels and work in Africa. She had no idea how these would translate into her invitations. A cultural design challenge! I took this as an opportunity to create their own custom print and not only worked it into their paper but even created fabrics that Brooke used for the table runners and groomsmen ties! I carried the details into the escort cards incorporating her hippo and other fun icons I made to symbolize their celebration.
Entire suite is 2 color letterpress in orange and grey on luxurious thick paper stocks. Back of the invitation is screen printed in 4 colors to create an authentic artisanal feel. Later the custom Ceci print is turned into matching fabric that Ceci recommended using for their table runners and even had made into the groomsmen’s ties. Invitation is a specialty die cut shape that slides in and out of a custom sleeve with a die cut hole center to reveal the African message to guests. Escort cards played up the theme with die cut graphics of the African designs - guests received different icons which helped lead them to their tables marked with each symbol.

Alfie and I had some very personal and particular challenges we wanted to incorporate into our designs; text in Kiswahili, a motif from a wax print cloth we purchased in Rwanda, a graphic image of a hippo, and design sensibility a friend had already contributed to our "save the date" cards. Ceci is quite possibly the only studio that could have pulled these elements together in a creative and cohesive way, and one that felt true to our original vision. I will always remember my meeting with Ceci where we deconstructed the wax print pattern and chose colors and textures to capture the feel of the wax printing process.
